As an Ærø elopement photographer, intimate weddings like Gladys and Leon’s are exactly why I love documenting destination weddings in Denmark. The couple travelled from Germany to the small Danish island of Ærø with only a few of their closest people beside them for an intimate spring wedding filled with sea air, soft sunlight, and the calm atmosphere the island is so loved for.
Their civil ceremony took place in a beautiful private ceremony room inside the Old Merchant’s House in the centre of Ærøskøbing. Directly on the town square, the historic venue felt peaceful, personal, and perfectly suited for a wedding focused entirely on the cuple.
Even though it was only mid-April, the weather felt like the first real arrival of spring in Denmark. The island was covered in warm sunlight, blue skies, and just enough coastal wind to make everything feel alive in the most natural way.
Before the wedding, the bride told me she dreamed of having photographs by the sea with her veil moving in the wind behind her. And honestly, Ærø gave us exactly that kind of magic.
Getting Married on Ærø in Denmark
More and more international couples are choosing Ærø for destination weddings and elopements in Denmark, especially couples looking for a quieter and more relaxed alternative to Copenhagen with shorter waiting times for civil ceremonies.
The island has become well known for its peaceful atmosphere, beautiful coastline, and straightforward marriage process for international couples. Everything on Ærø feels close and unhurried. Whether arriving from Svendborg by ferry or staying in one of the island’s guesthouses, it quickly becomes the kind of place where you naturally slow down.
For this cuple , Ærø offered exactly what they were searching for: a meaningful and intimate wedding experience focused on each other and the people closest to them.

Wedding Ceremony at The Old Merchant’s House in Ærøskøbing
The ceremony itself took place in the private hall inside the Old Merchant’s House, one of the most intimate wedding venues in Ærøskøbing.
With only a few guests and two witnesses present, the atmosphere inside the room felt emotional, unrushed, and deeply personal. After the ceremony, everyone stayed inside the private venue for congratulations, drinks, and quiet moments together while the venue team took care of everything seamlessly, from alcoholic and non-alcoholic refreshments to the relaxed atmosphere that made the entire experience feel effortless and intimate.
One thing I loved immediately about them was how naturally joyful they were together. There was this soft balance between calm intimacy and playful energy, the kind that comes from two people who genuinely enjoy being around each other.
Wedding Portraits at Vesterstrand Beach and Ærøskøbing
After the ceremony, we stayed inside the hall for family photographs before heading to Vesterstrand, one of Ærøskøbing’s most beautiful beaches known for its colourful beach huts and calm coastline.
The spring wind coming from the sea gave the portraits movement and softness that perfectly matched the atmosphere of the day. The bride wore a simple white dress paired with a colourful spring bouquet that stood beautifully against the muted beach tones and blue sky.
Later, we wandered through the cobblestone streets of Ærøskøbing for a few relaxed portraits surrounded by the town’s historic houses and quiet alleyways. Ærøskøbing has this almost cinematic feeling in spring — colourful, peaceful, and slightly frozen in time.

Afternoon Portraits at Voderup Klint
We finished the day at Voderup Klint, one of the most breathtaking places on Ærø. The open meadows, dramatic cliffs, and endless sea views created the perfect final backdrop for such an intimate wedding day.
Standing near the cliffs with the wind moving through the veil and grass around them, everything felt incredibly quiet and free at the same time.
It was one of those spring evenings that reminds you why intimate weddings can feel so meaningful.
